Fresh grad gaji expectation, is my degree even worth it?

Just graduated degree, applying jobs and the offers only RM2800-3200. My friend with only SPM working sales earning more than me. Feel so demotivated, was the degree and PTPTN loan worth it? What is realistic starting gaji?

I felt exactly this way 6 years ago, so let me give you the long view. Fresh grad starting RM2800-3200 is normal for many non-technical fields in Malaysia, unfortunately the market is like that. Your SPM friend in sales earning more now is real, sales can pay well early because of commission, and skilled trades too. BUT the degree game is about the TRAJECTORY, not the starting line. Six years later, my salary more than tripled because the degree opened doors to roles that compound, promotions, and moving into management or specialised work that pure SPM often cannot access without the paper. Your friend in sales may plateau or the income may be volatile. The degree is an option-opener, not an instant payout. That said, the honest lesson: the degree ALONE is not enough anymore, what you do with it matters, build skills, network, job hop strategically every 2-3 years early on for the biggest jumps. The PTPTN was worth it if you leverage the degree well. Dont measure success at month one, measure it at year five. Keep grinding, upskill, and dont compare your chapter one to someone else chapter one.

Realistic starting gaji depends heavily on field. Engineering, IT, finance, accounting fresh grads can start RM3000-4000+, while general admin, arts, and oversupplied fields start lower RM2500-3000. If your offers feel low, look at the industry demand for your specific degree. Sometimes the answer is to pivot into a higher-demand skill (learn coding, data, digital marketing) on top of your degree. The paper plus a hot skill is where the money is.

Dont stay in your first job too long chasing "loyalty". The biggest fresh grad mistake is staying 5 years for RM100 annual increment. The market rewards movement early. I job hopped at year 2 and year 4, each time a 25-40% jump, way faster than internal raises. Your first job is for experience and a launchpad, not forever. Prove yourself, then move up and out.

Start managing your PTPTN early, the discount for consistent repayment and the tax relief help, and clearing it improves your credit for future loans (car, house). Dont ignore it. On the gaji, focus energy on making yourself more valuable rather than resenting your friend. Comparison is the thief of joy lah. Run your own race.
