What are the pitfalls of buying a second-hand car from a dealer versus direct owner in Malaysia

Looking to buy my first used car, budget around RM45,000 for maybe a Honda City or Myvi. Everyone tells me different things, some say buy from dealer for safety, some say direct owner is cheaper. What are the real traps I should watch out for?

I've bought three used cars, two from dealers and one direct owner, so here's my honest breakdown. Direct owner is usually RM3,000-6,000 cheaper because there's no dealer margin, but YOU take all the risk, so you must bring the car to a trusted workshop or Puspakom-style inspection before paying, check the service history, and verify there's no outstanding loan by checking the JPJ ownership and geran. Dealers cost more but a reputable one handles the loan, insurance, ownership transfer and often gives a short warranty, which is worth it if you're a first-timer who can't tell a flood-damaged car from a good one. The biggest trap either way is a car that was in an accident or flood and repaired to look fine, so always check the chassis for weld marks and the boot and carpet for water stains and rust.

Check the geran and make sure there's no outstanding hire purchase before you pay a single sen. I know someone who bought direct owner, paid cash, then found out the bank still held the car because the seller didn't settle the loan. Nightmare to sort out.

Negotiate on the road tax and insurance too, not just the car price. Dealers love to quote a nice car price then pile on processing fees. Ask for the out-the-door price including transfer, roadtax and insurance so you compare apples to apples.

Always do a proper inspection, pay RM50-100 for a mechanic to check it. Flood cars from the big floods a few years back are still floating around the market with cleaned-up interiors. Smell for musty odour and check under the seats and spare tyre well for rust and mud.

For a first car just get a Myvi from a reputable dealer lah. Parts cheap, everywhere can service, resale value strong, and any workshop knows the car inside out. Don't overthink it, the Myvi is the national second car for a reason.
