Cheapest and safest way to send money back to Malaysia from overseas?

Working abroad and sending money home to family monthly. The bank telegraphic transfer fees and bad exchange rate eat quite a lot. What are the cheaper, legit ways you all use to remit back to Malaysia? Don't want to use dodgy runner services.

Good that you avoiding runners, those unlicensed money changers can vanish with your money and it's illegal. Legit cheaper options I've used: (1) Licensed digital remittance services (the app-based ones) usually beat bank TT on both fees and exchange rate, transfers often arrive same day or minutes to a Malaysian bank account. Compare a few because the effective rate (after their margin) differs. (2) Multi-currency accounts let you hold the foreign currency and convert when the rate is good, then transfer, saving on poor spot rates. (3) Bank TT is the most expensive usually, use only if you need it. Key safety points: only use providers licensed by the relevant regulator (in Malaysia, remittance is regulated by Bank Negara, check they're a licensed remittance/money services business), and never a random 'faster cheaper' WhatsApp runner. Always compare the total cost = fee + the exchange rate margin, the 'zero fee' ones sometimes hide it in a worse rate. Send a test small amount first with any new service. Confirm a provider's licence status before trusting them with big sums.

Two money-saving habits: (1) Batch your transfers, sending one bigger amount monthly usually cheaper than several small ones because of per-transfer fees. (2) Watch the exchange rate and send more when MYR is weak (your foreign currency buys more ringgit), if your family's need isn't urgent that month. Also keep records of remittances for tax/proof purposes. And yes, only licensed channels, verify with the regulator. The convenience of a runner is never worth losing the whole amount with zero legal protection.

I send home monthly using a licensed remittance app, way cheaper than my bank's TT which used to charge a flat fee plus lousy rate. Money reaches my mak's Maybank account within the hour usually. I always check the rate on 2 apps before sending, sometimes one clearly better that day. Never use runner even if kawan say cheaper, my friend kena, the guy disappeared with a few thousand, no recourse because illegal. Stick to licensed, small premium worth the safety.
