Age 32, want to switch to tech from admin. Too late ah?

Been doing admin work for 8 years, gaji stuck around RM3800 no growth. Keep hearing tech jobs pay more. Thinking of learning coding or data analyst via bootcamp. Am I too old to switch at 32 with a family to support?

Switched from admin to data analyst at 34, so no, 32 is NOT too late lah. But be realistic with a family depending on you - dont quit your job to study full time. Learn part time while employed (evenings/weekends). Start FREE first before paying any bootcamp: freeCodeCamp, Google Data Analytics cert on Coursera (can financial aid), YouTube. Build 2-3 real projects for your portfolio (analyse Malaysian open data, thats what got me noticed). Your admin experience is actually an ASSET - you understand business processes, Excel, stakeholders, which many fresh coders lack. Target roles like data analyst, BI, or business analyst that value that combo. Expect maybe a slight pay dip or lateral move first to get your foot in, then it climbs fast. Took me about a year of grinding after work. Doable with discipline!

Dont underestimate the internal move option. Ask if your current company has a tech/ops analytics team you can transfer into - they already know you, easier entry, and you keep your salary while you upskill. I moved from HR admin to People Analytics within the same company. Sometimes the door is right next to you.

Not everyone needs to code. QA, tech support, project coordination, product roles - all pay better than admin and value your soft skills. Coding is not the only door into tech lah. Explore what fits your strengths.

Before paying RM10k+ for a bootcamp, check HRD Corp claimable courses (if your company registered) or the free/subsidised programs by MDEC and MyDigital. Malaysia got quite a few reskilling initiatives. No need to blow your family savings on expensive bootcamp when subsidised options exist.
