How do you cope with burnout when quitting is not an option because you have a housing loan

I'm mentally exhausted from my job, dreading every Monday, but I have a house loan and car loan to service so I can't just quit and rest. Feels trapped. How do others deal with burnout when you're financially locked in?

I hit this exact wall two years ago, servicing a house in Semenyih and a car, feeling completely trapped and dreading work daily. What actually helped, in order of impact: first, I used my medical leave and even took unpaid leave for a proper two-week break instead of pretending I was fine, because burnout is a health issue not weakness. Second, I quietly started applying for other jobs while employed, because just having options and interviews lined up made me feel less trapped even before I moved. Third, I saw a counsellor, and if cost is a worry, remember SOCSO now covers mental health consultations and there are free helplines like Befrienders. The trap is real but you have more moves than you think, you just can't see them clearly when you're this exhausted, so protect your health first, then plan your exit slowly.

Build a small emergency fund first, even three months of expenses, then the trapped feeling loosens a lot. When you know you CAN survive a few months without pay, suddenly your boss has less power over you. Freedom is a fully-funded runway.

Please see a doctor if the dread is affecting your sleep and appetite, that's not just tiredness anymore. SOCSO covers mental health now and Befrienders (03-76272929) is free and confidential. I ignored mine for a year and it got much worse, don't be like me.

Job hop. Harsh but true, sometimes the burnout is the specific toxic environment, not work itself. I moved companies for a similar salary but way better culture and my Monday dread vanished. Update your CV, the market always needs good people.

Don't underestimate small changes lah. I couldn't quit but I negotiated to WFH two days a week and it cut my commute stress massively. Sometimes you don't need to escape the job, just fix the one part that's killing you. Ask your boss, worst case they say no.
