Is asking for a counter-offer worth it when you resign, or does it backfire later

My current company pays me RM5,200 as a senior exec in KL. I got an offer for RM7,000 at another firm and when I gave my resignation letter, my boss suddenly said he can match RM6,800. Now I'm confused whether to stay or go. Anyone here accepted a counter-offer and regretted it later? Share your real story lah.

I accepted a counter-offer in 2021, they bumped me from RM4,500 to RM6,000 on the spot. Six months later I realised the trust was gone, my manager slowly cut me out of important projects and I was among the first retrenched during a restructuring. The hard truth is once they know you were walking out the door, you become a flight risk in their eyes, so take the counter-offer only if the real reason you wanted to leave was purely money. In my case it wasn't, so I should have just gone.

Statistically most people who accept counter-offers leave within a year anyway according to what my HR friend told me. But I know one senior colleague who took the counter, stayed five years and got promoted twice. So it's not always doom, just be realistic about your own situation.

Depends on why you wanted to leave in the first place. If it was toxic boss or no career growth, RM1,600 extra won't fix that lah, you'll be back on JobStreet in three months. If it was purely salary and you genuinely like the team, staying can make sense.

Bro just take the money and run. Companies only find your value after you resign, why you want to reward that kind of behaviour? If they could pay you RM6,800 all along, means they were happily underpaying you for years.
