Failed BM in SPM, can I still further study or not?

My son got 7A but gagal Bahasa Melayu. Everyone say without pass BM your SPM cert like useless already. Is it true he cannot enter matrikulasi or any IPTA? Anyone been through this before?

Been there sis. I failed BM in 2016, cried for one week thinking my life over. Turns out not so dramatic. I went private uni foundation first, they only wanted overall results and English. Later I resat BM once and passed. One tip: the ulangan timetable and registration go through Lembaga Peperiksaan and your old school can help you daftar. Free feel to call the sekolah, cikgu will guide. Your son fine one, 7A that's brilliant already.

I teach BM tuition and see this every year. The rule is you need at least a pass (lulus) in BM for the full SPM certificate to be considered complete for IPTA and civil service. With 7A your boy is clearly strong, so the BM issue is usually essay technique, not the language itself. Get him to sit SPM ulangan, focus on Karangan format and Rumusan, practise past year Kertas 1 and 2. Most repeat students pass easily when they train the format. Meanwhile he can already apply to IPTS diploma or foundation which don't always insist on BM credit. So two tracks jalan sama-sama, tak rugi apa pun.

Don't panic la. My cousin also fail BM and he still study diploma in a private college, no problem one. But if you target IPTA or matrikulasi, credit in BM memang wajib for most courses, and to get the SPM sijil recognised properly you should pass BM. Best thing your son can do is repeat BM as a private candidate (calon persendirian) in the November SPM ulangan. Register through the state education department, exam only that one subject, cheap and fast. My cousin took ulangan, passed, then applied diploma no issue. Cert with all subjects intact opens more doors later, especially for gov jobs and IPTA transfer. So repeat lah, don't give up the whole future for one subject.
