Worth it to settle car loan early or just let it run?
Got some extra savings and thinking to settle my hire purchase car loan early. But heard because of the flat rate interest, settle early not much saving. Is it true? Anyone actually did early settlement and calculated?

You're right to check, because most Malaysian car loans are hire purchase with flat rate interest, and the total interest is calculated upfront on the original amount. When you settle early, the bank gives you a rebate on the unexpired interest (this is required under the Hire Purchase Act), but there's a formula (Rule of 78) that means the rebate is smaller in the early years and bigger toward the end. So settling in year 1 of a 9-year loan saves more remaining interest than settling in year 8. Best move: call your bank and ask for an official early settlement quote, they'll give you the exact payoff figure including the rebate. Compare the interest you'd save versus what that lump sum could earn elsewhere (even a fixed deposit or unit trust). For many people, if the loan interest is higher than what savings earn, settling wins and the peace of mind is worth it. But get the actual settlement figure first, don't guess.

Counterpoint: don't drain all your savings just to settle. Keep an emergency fund first, at least a few months expenses. Car can rosak, life can throw surprises. If after keeping buffer you still got surplus and the settlement saving is meaningful, then go. Also once settled, remember to collect the geran (ownership transfer to your name) and update JPJ, some people forget and the car still shows financed.
I settled mine 3 years into a 7-year loan. Requested the settlement letter from bank, the rebate was decent because still quite a few years left. Saved me a few thousand in interest and now no more monthly commitment, best feeling. But my friend wanted to settle in year 6, the saving was tiny so he just let it finish. So it really depends how early you are. Get the exact number lah, banks compute it for free.
