Which telco actually best for coverage and value now?
My current telco keep dropping signal in my area and the data plan getting expensive. Thinking of switching. Which telco you all find best for coverage plus reasonable price in 2026? I travel between KL and hometown Kuantan often.

Honestly the "best" telco depends heavily on YOUR specific routes and where you stay, not a universal answer. Since you travel KL-Kuantan, coverage along the highway and in Kuantan matters more than raw KL city coverage where everyone is good. My tip: the big established networks (the ones with widest tower coverage) win for rural and highway stretches, while the newer MVNOs and budget brands ride on those same networks but cheaper, so you can get good coverage AND value by picking an MVNO that piggybacks on a strong network. Before switching, ask friends/family who live along your exact route which network works at their house and on the highway, real usage beats coverage maps. Also most telcos now let you get a prepaid SIM cheaply, so test drive one for a month on your actual routes before you port your number over. I did this and avoided a costly mistake. With MNP (number portability) you keep your number when switching, so no excuse to stay with bad signal.

MVNOs (the smaller digital brands) are where the value is now. Same tower as the big boys but half the price for data, no contract, manage everything in app. I switched to one and my bill dropped a lot with no coverage difference in the city. Just note that during congestion, MVNO traffic can be deprioritised behind the host network primary customers, but for normal use I never noticed.

Dont get locked into a long contract just for a "free" phone, you often pay more overall. I prefer buying phone separately and using a flexible SIM-only plan. Gives freedom to switch the moment coverage or price disappoints. Contracts are how they keep you stuck with bad service.

For the KL-Kuantan drive specifically, the LPT highway has some stretches through hills where only the widest-coverage network holds signal, the budget-focused networks drop. If staying connected on the drive matters (Waze, calls), pay a bit more for the network with the best highway coverage. Test with a prepaid SIM on one round trip before committing.
