Govt hospital vs private, worth paying for private?
I need minor surgery. Govt hospital cheap but wait so long. Private fast but mahal. What's your experience been like?

For serious or complex stuff, honestly govt hospital (HKL, UMMC, hospital besar) specialists are excellent, many are the top experts in the country and handle high volume, so they are very experienced. The tradeoff is the waiting time and less "hotel" comfort. For minor elective surgery where waiting months is annoying but not dangerous, this is exactly where private shines: you get it done in weeks, choose your timing, private room. My rule: if it's urgent/complex/expensive-in-private (like cancer, cardiac), govt is genuinely world class and won't bankrupt you. If it's minor and you value speed and comfort and got insurance or savings, private is worth it. Best move for many Malaysians: get diagnosed and consult in govt (accurate, cheap), then decide where to do the procedure. And please get medical card / insurance before you need it, not after.
I did my gallbladder removal at govt hospital, total cost was like RM100 plus. Waited about 3 months for the non-urgent slot but the surgeon was damn good and professional. If money tight and it can wait, govt is unbeatable value. Malaysians are lucky to have it, don't take it for granted.

Private is fast but watch out for the bill creep, every little thing charged separately and it adds up scary. Get an estimate in writing first and ask if there's a package price. Without insurance a "minor" private surgery can easily be RM8k to RM15k. Always ask upfront.
If you got the option, university hospitals like UMMC or HUKM are a nice middle ground, cheaper than private, often shorter wait than general govt hospital, and you get senior specialists plus trainees. That's where I do my follow ups. Consider that too lah.
