Interviewer asked my expected salary, I said too high and never heard back

Fresh grad here, first few interviews. HR asked expected salary and I said RM4,000 for an admin exec role. After that no reply. Now I dunno what number to give. How you all handle this question?

From my experience interviewing fresh grads, RM4,000 for admin exec in KL is on the high side unless you have strong skills or it is a big MNC. The trick is to give a range and tie it to the market. I usually say something like 'based on my research the range is RM2,800 to RM3,500, and I am open to discuss depending on the full scope.' That shows you did homework and you are flexible. Check Jobstreet salary guide and MyFutureJobs for the real range of your role and location before the interview. Never throw a number out of the sky.

Don't be discouraged, one no-reply doesn't mean your number killed it, sometimes they just filled the post. When I was fresh grad I learned to ask them first: 'May I know the budgeted range for this position?' Many HR will tell you. If they insist you answer, give a range slightly above what you actually want so there is room to negotiate down. Also, salary is not everything as a fresh grad, ask about EPF, medical, training and OT claim. My first job paid RM2,900 but gave great training and I doubled my pay within three years. Focus on learning first.
