Interviewer asked why I have a 1-year gap in my resume, how to answer?

I took a year off to care for my sick mother and now I'm back job hunting. Every interview they ask about the gap and I get flustered. I don't want to sound like I'm making excuses but I also don't want to overshare family stuff. How do you all handle this kind of question?

Been there, I had a 14-month gap after my confinement plus caring for my newborn. What worked for me was being honest but brief: 'I took time off for a family caregiving responsibility, that's now resolved and I'm fully ready to commit.' Then immediately pivot to what you did to stay sharp, like online courses or freelance. Interviewers mostly want to know you're stable and won't disappear again. Don't apologise or ramble, say it with confidence. Most decent hiring managers in Malaysia are actually quite understanding about family matters.

I run a small team and interview people often. A gap is really not a red flag to me, what's a red flag is when someone gets defensive or gives a vague story that doesn't add up. Just say the truth simply. Caring for a sick parent is honestly something most Malaysian bosses respect, it shows responsibility. Frame it as 'I made a choice to prioritise family, and now I'm ready to give 100% to work.' If you can add one thing you did to keep skills current, even better. Confidence matters more than the gap itself.
