I've driven from KL to Penang during peak season many times, and I can tell you that the best route to take is the North-South Expressway, but with some modifications. Instead of taking the main toll road, I take the exit at Sungai Buloh and drive through the town to avoid the traffic jam. Then, I join back the expressway at the next exit. It saves me around 30 minutes to 1 hour of traffic time. Additionally, I always make sure to check the traffic updates before I leave and plan my journey accordingly. For example, I use the Waze app to get real-time traffic updates and adjust my route accordingly.

I drove from KL to Penang last year during the Hari Raya holidays, and I took the North-South Expressway. It was a nightmare - the traffic was so bad that it took us 8 hours to reach Penang. I think it's because everyone was taking the same route, so it was congested. Maybe consider taking the old road, like the Butterworth-Penang route?

I recommend taking the East Coast route, which goes through Kuantan and Kota Bharu. It's a bit longer, but the scenery is beautiful, and the traffic is usually lighter.
