Got a summons for something I didn't do, how to dispute a traffic saman?

I received a JPJ/PDRM saman notice claiming I beat a red light at a junction in PJ, but I'm sure I didn't, and the photo is unclear. I don't want to just pay to make it go away if I'm not guilty. How do I dispute a traffic summons in Malaysia? Has anyone successfully appealed?

Dashcam is your best friend, this is exactly why I installed one. When I got a wrongful saman, I had footage proving I stopped properly and the appeal was straightforward. Without your own evidence, disputing is harder but still possible: go to the issuing authority (PDRM traffic branch for red-light usually), request to view their evidence, and if it's genuinely unclear or mistaken, file a formal appeal. Be polite and factual, bring IC, license, and the saman notice. One tip: don't ignore it hoping it disappears, unpaid samans can lead to a blacklist affecting your road tax renewal. If the amount is small and evidence is against you, sometimes it's not worth the hassle, but for principle and if you're truly innocent, appeal. For complex disputes, a lawyer's advice helps.

I successfully disputed a saman before. First, check the details carefully on the MyEG or PDRM/JPJ portal, the location, time, and vehicle. Request the evidence photo, you have the right to see it. If the photo is unclear or the plate/location is wrong, that's your basis. You can file an appeal (rayuan) at the relevant PDRM or JPJ office, or write in, stating your case with any evidence like your own dashcam footage if you have it. Bring your documents and go in person, politely explain. It took me a couple of visits but they cancelled it because their photo couldn't clearly prove it. Don't just pay if you're genuinely not guilty, but if the evidence against you is solid, appealing wastes time. For serious cases or if it escalates, consult a lawyer.
