If I resign before bonus month, do I still get prorated bonus?

My company pay bonus in March. If I resign in January, can I still claim prorated for the months I worked last year? Or hangus already? Contract not very clear on this part.

Depends 100% on your contract or company policy, there is no law forcing them to pay bonus if you are not employed on payout date. Most Malaysian companies have a clause "must be in active employment and not serving notice on the bonus payment date to be eligible". So if you resign in Jan and bonus is March, very likely you get zero, even though you worked the whole previous year. Cruel but common. My advice, if the bonus is worth a lot, time your resignation for AFTER you receive it. I literally waited until my bonus hit the account, then submitted resignation the next week. Check your handbook carefully, if it genuinely says nothing about active employment, you may have a case, but dont assume.

HR wont volunteer this info, you must ask directly. Email your HR and ask in writing whether you remain eligible for prorated bonus if you resign before payout. Get it in black and white before you make any move. Verbal promises mean nothing here.

Some contractual bonus (guaranteed 13th month) is different from discretionary bonus. Contractual one you may be able to claim prorated even if you leave, because it is part of agreed remuneration. Discretionary one is up to company mood. Read carefully whether yours is "guaranteed" or "subject to company performance and discretion of management". Big difference.

Ya just wait for the bonus lor, why rush. I planned my whole job move around bonus timing. Got the bonus end of Feb, resigned first week March. Extra few weeks of waiting saved me like two months salary. New employer understood when I told them my start date.
