I've heard horror stories of the North-South highway being a car park for 8-10 hours near tolls and Ipoh. For the seasoned balik kampung drivers, what's your actual strategy, what time to leave, which stops, and how to not go crazy stuck in the jam with kids?

I always pack a cooler with water, roti, boiled eggs and a portable toilet thing for the kids, because when it jams near Gopeng you can be stuck 90 minutes with no exit. Also check PLUS's Twitter/app and Waze for live updates, and consider the coastal route or exiting to trunk roads if the highway is truly dead, sometimes the old road through the town is faster.

The ETS from KL Sentral is comfortable, no jam stress, and the kids can walk around, then you Grab or borrow a car in Penang. I switched to ETS for two years and it was so much less tiring, book the tickets the moment they open because festive seats vanish in minutes. That said, if your kampung is far from the station or you need to carry a lot of Raya stuff and buah tangan, driving wins on flexibility. Decide based on how much luggage and how young the kids are.

My tip: use the RnR strategically and don't fight the crowd. Everyone stops at the big R&R like Tapah and Sungai Buloh so they're chaos, I plan to stop at the smaller layby or a town like Bidor for the famous heong peah and duck noodles, more relaxed and better food. Toilet break the kids BEFORE it's an emergency because in a jam there's no shoulder to escape. Do NOT drive if you're the only driver and you're exhausted, microsleep on the PLUS highway kills people every festive season. If you're driving overnight to beat the jam, make sure you slept in the day, and stop at an R&R to nap even 20 minutes if your eyes get heavy. Check your tyres, including the spare, brake pads and engine oil at least a week before, the workshops are closed during Raya. Also topup your Touch n Go eWallet and physical card, running out of balance at the toll while jammed is embarrassing and stressful.

Consider going against the standard flow. If Raya is on a Wednesday, everyone balik on the Monday/Tuesday, so if you can take extra leave and travel Sunday or even the Saturday before, the highway is much smoother. Coming back, don't return on the last day of the holiday, that's the worst 'balik KL' jam near Bukit Beruntung. I now always come back one day earlier or leave at like 2am. Yes you sacrifice a bit of kampung time, but you save your sanity and your car's fuel from all that stop-go. Fuel economy in a jam is terrible, budget extra RM50-80 petrol.
