Balik kampung for Raya, how to avoid the jam?

Every year KL to Kelantan I get stuck 10 hours. Any tips on timing or route to make it less painful?

KL to Kelantan Raya veteran here. The single biggest tip: leave at an odd hour, not when everyone else does. I leave around 2 to 4am the day before most people, roads empty, kids sleep in the car, and I reach before the crowd builds. Second: avoid balik on the last working day evening, that's the worst peak, everyone rushing same time. Route-wise, the Karak/East Coast Highway (LPT) is the main artery and it jams, so watch Waze/Google live and be willing to detour to the old trunk roads (Gua Musang route) if the highway is a parking lot, sometimes longer distance but keeps moving. Fill petrol and pee BEFORE the R and R, because the R and R itself will be chaos and the queue for toilet alone is 30 minutes. Bring snacks, water, power bank, and sabar. It's part of the experience lah.

Consider flying or taking the train (ETS/KTM) for part of the way if you can, then borrow family car locally. Firefly and MASwings fly to Kota Bharu. During Raya flights pricey but if you book super early, sometimes cheaper than the petrol plus toll plus your sanity for a 10 hour drive.

If your leave allows, balik one or two days EARLIER than the crowd and come back one or two days LATER. The jam is all about everyone moving on the same 2 days. I take extra annual leave around Raya just for this, the smooth drive is worth the leave days. Balik on the actual eve is asking for 12 hours.

Service your car BEFORE balik, check tyre, brake, radiator, all. The jam plus heat kills unprepared cars and being stuck on the highway with an overheating engine at 3pm is misery. Also bawa air kosong extra and a small first aid kit. Better prepared than sorry.
