Interviewer asked why I left my last job after only 6 months, how to answer?

I left my previous job after 6 months because the environment was toxic and boss was terrible. Now in interviews they always ask why so short. I don't want to badmouth but also don't want to lie. How to phrase this?

From my experience interviewing candidates, the golden rule is never badmouth your old boss, it makes YOU look like the problem, fair or not. Keep it short, honest and forward-looking. Something like: 'The role turned out different from what was described, and the working style wasn't the right fit for me long-term, so I decided to look for a place where I can grow and contribute properly.' Then pivot to why THIS job excites you. Avoid drama and specifics about the toxicity. Interviewers care more about your attitude and how you talk about difficulty than the reason itself. Stay calm, professional and positive. If pushed, you can mention a couple of neutral factors (role mismatch, direction change) without trashing anyone. Practice saying it out loud so it sounds natural, not bitter.

I've been in this exact spot. The trick is to be honest but classy, no bad-mouthing. I said something like: 'I realised early the role and environment weren't aligned with what I was promised and how I work best, and rather than stay unhappy and underperform, I chose to find a better fit. I've reflected on what I'm really looking for, which is why I'm excited about this role.' That frames you as self-aware and decisive, not a job-hopper or a complainer. Focus the rest of the answer on the future and what you bring. Never dish dirt, even if the interviewer seems to invite it, they may be testing your professionalism. Keep it brief and move on confidently. Prep this answer beforehand so you don't fumble.
