HR here, sat in maybe 800+ interviews across KL and PJ. The mistakes that quietly kill you: One, being late and blaming traffic or LRT. Everybody in KL faces jam, we don't care, leave earlier. Two, when we ask expected salary, don't say up to you or market rate. Give a range, shows you did homework. Three, badmouthing your previous boss or company. Even if betul teruk, we hear it and think you will do the same to us. Four, no questions at the end. When we say any questions and you say no, you look blur or not interested. Ask about the team, the growth, anything. Five, over-inflating on the resume then cannot answer when we drill. We test fast. Just be honest about what you actually did. Manners, clarity and attitude beat a fancy CV nine times out of ten, especially for fresh grads where we hire on potential and character more than experience.

Dress properly but read the room first, don't overkill. I have seen fresh grads come in a full formal suit for a casual startup and look stiff and uncomfortable the whole time, which actually counts against them. Check the company vibe before you go, stalk their Instagram or LinkedIn photos. Smart casual is the safe default for most Malaysian offices, formal for banks and corporate, relaxed for creative or tech startups. Also, and this is common with local fresh grads, firm handshake and eye contact. So many candidates mumble, look at the floor, and give one-word answers. Confidence you can fake with good posture and a smile even when your heart is pounding. Practice it.

Watch the tell me about yourself trap, it sinks so many people. Don't recite your whole life story from Standard 6 primary school. They are not asking for your biography, they want a tight 90-second pitch: who you are, what you have done, and why you fit this role. I rambled for a full 5 minutes in my very first interview and I literally watched the interviewer's eyes glaze over and he started checking his phone. Prepare that opening answer almost word for word and practise it out loud until it flows naturally. First impressions in the first two minutes set the tone for the whole interview, so nail that opener and everything after feels easier.

One MY-specific thing nobody mentions: if the interview flows in a mix of BM and English, follow the interviewer's lead, don't force perfect corporate English. Sometimes the boss switches to Bahasa to make you comfortable and to see the real you, so being natural and relatable matters more than sounding like a TED talk. Malaysians hire people they feel they can work with day to day. Also, always send a short thank-you email or message within a day, referencing something specific you discussed. Almost no fresh grad does this here, so it makes you stand out and shows you actually want it. Small effort, disproportionate impact. It has literally tipped decisions in my experience.
