EPF Account 1, 2 & 3

Finance

EPF splits each member's retirement savings across separate accounts with different purposes. Historically most savings sat in Account 1 for long-term retirement and could not be withdrawn early, while Account 2 allowed withdrawals for housing, education, health, and age-55 needs. EPF has since restructured the accounts, introducing a flexible account to allow limited short-term withdrawals alongside the retirement and lifestyle portions. The idea is to balance guaranteed retirement savings with some access for urgent needs. The exact account names, proportions, and withdrawal rules have changed over time and are subject to the latest rules.
