How to order at mamak like a pro?

I always blur when ordering at mamak. Teh tarik kurang manis, roti this and that, so many terms. Teach me the lingo lah.

Okay crash course. DRINKS: teh = tea with milk, teh o = tea no milk (o means kosong/no milk, just sugar), teh o ais limau = iced tea with lime, kurang manis = less sweet, tak mau manis/kosong = no sugar, teh tarik = the pulled frothy one, teh peng = iced milk tea. Same logic for kopi (coffee) and milo. "Bunga" sometimes means with extra froth. ROTI: roti kosong = plain, roti telur = with egg, roti bawang = onion, roti planta = with margarine, roti tisu = the tall crispy cone, roti bom = sweet buttery, roti banjir = flooded with dhal/curry. FOOD: maggi goreng, nasi goreng kampung, mee goreng mamak, tosai/thosai. Pro moves: order drink kurang manis unless you want diabetes, and just point and say "satu ini" if you forget the name, the abang will understand. Say "bungkus" for takeaway, "makan sini" for dine in. Relax lah, mamak abang very patient one.

Don't stress lah, mamak is the most forgiving place to order. Point also can, campur (mix) also can. My tip: "roti telur bawang" is the underrated hero, egg and onion, so good with dhal. And late night "maggi goreng mamak" hits different. Just go and experiment, no wrong answer.

Golden rule for health: always ask kurang manis or you will get a drink so sweet it can wake the dead. Standard mamak teh tarik got crazy amount of condensed milk. I always say "teh o ais limau kurang manis" and my abang already know me. Start there, safe choice, refreshing.

One thing people forget, at busy mamak you sometimes order drinks from the drink abang who roams around, and food you tell the other waiter or at the counter. And for the food to come faster, be clear and loud a bit, the place is noisy. Nasi kandar is order-at-counter usually, point what lauk you want.
