Confinement lady RM4500 for a month, worth it or waste money?

First baby coming soon. Mother in law suggests hiring a confinement lady (pua kar / bibik) but it is RM4500+ for a month, quite a lot. Some say worth every sen, some say waste. For first time parents, is it necessary?

Here is the real value: newborn sleep is brutal, both parents zombie, and a good confinement lady handles night feeds, cooks the nourishing confinement meals (so mum recovers faster), teaches you how to bathe/handle baby, and lets you actually sleep. First time parents especially benefit because you learn from her experience. BUT it depends on your situation: if your own mum or MIL is experienced, willing, and you all get along, you might not need to pay. Also personalities matter - interview and get referrals, a bad one who is bossy or unhygienic is not worth RM4500. Alternatives: confinement centre (pricier but full service), part time confinement lady (cheaper), or catering just the confinement meals while family helps with baby. We chose full month and it saved our sanity and our marriage that month.

One caution - agree on the food and practices upfront. Some old school confinement ladies very strict (no bath, no aircond, force certain herbs) which may clash with your doctor advice or comfort. Discuss expectations before hiring so no tension during that sensitive month. Communication saves a lot of stress.

If budget tight, consider just hiring for 2 weeks instead of full month (the hardest recovery period), or a part-timer who comes daytime only. You dont have to do the full RM4500 package. Also book EARLY, good confinement ladies get booked months ahead, especially the ones with good reviews.

We didnt hire, my mum came to help instead, saved the money and it was nice bonding. But not everyone has that option or a mum who is fit enough. If your family cannot commit fully, the confinement lady is worth it - the alternative is two exhausted parents which can be dangerous (postnatal depression is real). Weigh your actual support system.
