Road Tax

Transport

Road tax (cukai jalan) is a compulsory annual fee vehicle owners pay to JPJ to legally drive on public roads. For private cars the amount is based mainly on engine capacity, so larger engines pay more, with different scales for Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, and separate structures for electric vehicles. Valid motor insurance is required before you can renew road tax. Renewal can be done online, at post offices, JPJ counters, or agents, and driving with expired road tax is an offence. Rates, structures, and renewal channels are set by JPJ and subject to the latest rules.
